 Development of an innovative location and tracking device with autonomous emergency activation capabilities usable in GPS hostile environments

Our idea is to develop a highly accurate positioning and location device to be used by elderly who suffer from dementia. The wish to grant the elderly freedom often conflicts with the obligation to provide them with safety, because dementia sufferers often wander without the ability to return or alert caregivers. 

The device we envisage utilizes the user’s movement patterns, as recorded by GPS and Dead reckoning (DR) systems (here, based on MEMS gyroscope and accelerometer sensors), to continuously learn how the user acts and behaves and combines this information with internal mapping to establish safe-zones and pattern-recognition that makes it possible for the device to recognize if the wearer is wandering or performing usual daily tasks. This is made possible through the device’s learning capability that can be enabled when the user is accompanied during walks. If the user is wandering the device’s GPRS communication capability will alert emergency services.
